From HR to Web Development
It is never too late to change careers.
When I first told my friends and family that I wanted to be a Web Developer I received a lot of different responses. My husband was encouraging as he knew I was craving a more creative and fulfilling career. My friends were more worried about me leaving my career in Human Resources. They pictured me trading in my lipstick and heels for sweat pants and Cheeto dusted shirts. Then you have my parents, who were excited to have someone who could help set up their printer.
I didn’t really choose HR, I kind of fell into it. I was working at an e-commerce startup as an Executive Assistance and found myself performing a lot of HR tasks since they were lacking an HR department. I approached management with a proposal for them to sponsor me in completing an HR certification and I would in return build them an HR department. Thus began my career. However, over the years, I found that I was happiest when I was learning new software, converting companies from paper to electronic systems, or solving problems with apps.
It took me ten years to finally take the plunge and dive into development. Life seemed to always get in the way and I continually put my dream on hold. Then this little thing called a pandemic, gave me the real push I needed to make the big shift in careers.
